Helpfulness
A model's ability to genuinely assist users in accomplishing their goals in a way that's accurate, clear, and appropriately complete.
Helpfulness is one of the three pillars of the HHH framework — and in many ways the most fundamental, because users come to AI tools for assistance. A helpful model doesn’t just respond to the surface request; it understands what the user is actually trying to accomplish and provides what they need to get there. Crucially, being unhelpful isn’t safe — refusing to answer reasonable questions, adding excessive disclaimers, or giving wishy-washy non-answers has real costs for users who needed accurate information. For behavior architects, helpfulness is the positive goal that safety and harmlessness exist in tension with, and calibrating that tension thoughtfully — not defaulting to refusal whenever things are complicated — is one of the most important skills in the role.
