Semantics

Semantics is the study of meaning: what words and sentences refer to, how concepts relate to each other, and how language maps onto the world. For AI models, semantic understanding is what allows them to recognize that “automobile,” “car,” and “vehicle” are related concepts, or that “What’s the best way to break into a car?” could mean something very different depending on whether the person is locked out of their own car or planning theft. For behavior architects, semantic analysis helps diagnose failures where a model produces a response that is grammatically fine but semantically misaligned — it answered a different question than the one that was asked, or missed a crucial distinction in meaning that changed the nature of the request.
